What is Operation Cool?

Tri-County Operation Cool is a teen-focused program developed to increase seat  belt usage through education and incentive awards.  Twenty high schools, with approximately 10,000 students,          in DeWitt, McLean and Livingston Counties currently participate in the program. 

Students are asked to sign contracts that state they will:

  • Stay enrolled in school
  • Wear their seat belts at all times while operating or riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle
  • Ask their passengers to wear their seat belts at all times
  • Not issued a seat belt citation
  • Not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Teen Drivers: Fact Sheet

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for 36% of all deaths        in this age group. In 2004, 4,767 teens ages 16 to 19 died of injuries caused by motor vehicle             crashes (CDC 2006). The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than           other age groups. Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older         drivers to crash (IIHS 2006).(source: Centers for Disease Control (CDC))

2009 Winner - Normal West student Annie Brown

Annie Brown was the 2009 winner and received the 12th car, a 2009 Mitsubishi Solar Eclipse, given away by Tri-County Opertation COOL!
